Join us for the opening of Growing up on Country, a deeply personal exhibition by acclaimed Gunggandji and Gimuy Walubara Yidinji artist Elverina Johnson, followed by a special artist talk and afternoon refreshments.

Drawing on memories of her childhood in Yarrabah, Growing up on Country reflects Johnson’s enduring connection to Country, family, culture, and community. Through painting and sculptural installation, the exhibition shares stories of growing up by the ocean and rainforest, living in a tin humpy with her parents and siblings, and the experiences that continue to inspire her artistic practice today.

A celebrated artist whose practice spans painting, textiles, fashion, and community cultural work, Johnson is recognised for her vibrant storytelling and commitment to sharing cultural knowledge. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including the 25th Biennale of Sydney, Rememory (2026), and she was awarded National NAIDOC Artist of the Year in 2017.

The afternoon will feature an artist talk with Elverina Johnson, providing insight into the stories, memories, and cultural connections that underpin the exhibition, followed by an opportunity for audience questions and informal conversation.
