Elverina Johnson

Yarrabah

Elverina Johnson is a Gunggandji and Gimuy Walubara Yidinji artist from the 1 Aboriginal Community in Far North Queensland.

Her practice spans painting, textiles, fashion, and broader work within her community. Everything she creates is grounded in storytelling, drawing on her lived experiences and ongoing connections to Country, culture, and community.

Having spent her entire life in Yarrabah, the sea and rainforest feature strongly in Elverina’s stories. Country holds her family’s memories, resilience, and cultural connections, forming the foundation of her creative practice.

Alongside her artistic work, Elverina is deeply committed to sharing cultural knowledge. It is important to her that her practice continues and strengthens these cultural connections. Her use of colour, texture, and material reflects her memories of growing up in the community, her identity, and the strong relationship between the many elements of Country.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in the 25th Biennale of Sydney, Rememory (2026), alongside major public commissions and fashion collaborations. In 2017, Elverina was awarded National NAIDOC Artist of the Year in recognition of both her artistic practice and her ongoing contribution to community and culture.
