Growing Up on Country transforms Elverina Johnson’s vibrant artistic language into a moving digital animation that brings the façade of Bulmba-ja Arts Centre to life. Featuring sea turtles gliding across the building, the work reflects Johnson’s deep connection to the ocean, Country, and the childhood experiences that continue to shape her practice.

Growing up in Yarrabah on the Country of the Gunggandji people, Johnson draws on memories of life by the beach with her family—fishing, gathering seafood, and learning from the natural environment. These experiences form the foundation of her storytelling, celebrating the enduring relationship between people, place, and culture.

The graceful movement of the turtles across the façade evokes the rhythms of the sea and the living knowledge passed through generations. Rendered in Johnson’s distinctive palette of bright, joyful colours, the animation honours the happiness, freedom, and sense of belonging that defined her childhood while inviting audiences to reflect on the continuing connections between Country, community, and cultural identity.
