WAARI PRESENTS MUKI

MEDIA KIT | MEDIA IMAGES

MUKI is WAARI’s debut EP, a 5-track exploration of Blak life, land, love and futurity.
Following the cycles of life – birth, coming of age, death and rebirth – as they connect to cycles of family across generations and land across seasons. MUKI is a reminder that the voice is an instrument to make change and keep alive.

➢ WILT Single (Out Sep 17, 2024)

WILT finds a new way to pronounce pain. It is a song about hurting; witnessing and
experiencing the harm of colonisation. Thinking of his Country – Kalkadoon Country –
WAARI mourns the stolen land, abused by mining, and the loss of life and culture that comes from this.

WILT is a protest against the silence, on a global scale, that shrouds what’s happening to
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in so-called Australia. It reflects the cycles of
damage and shame, all the problems that remain unresolved, the wounds that stay open, the mourning and the need for healing.

The echo of ‘corners to bleed into’ speaks of cyclicality; the decay that must happen for new
seasons to arise, again and again. This reverberation also pays tribute to the legacy of
endurance – the fight and resistance that has bled into the land of WAARI’s home.

➢ MUKI EP (Out Nov 1, 2024)

MUKI survives, cycles, reminds, changes, returns.
An exploration of Blak life, land, love and futures.

Following the cycles of life — birth, coming of age, death and rebirth — as they connect to cycles of family across generations and land across seasons.

MUKI is a reminder that the voice is an instrument to make change and keep alive.

WAARI states:

“Creating MUKI has involved boundary-crossing, channelling complicated experiences and
feelings, a lot of personal rebuilding and learning, reconnecting with my cultural practices,
and deepening my commitment to them. I weave together stories of my people, making
visible their strengths and struggles. In these challenging times, MUKI has been a form of healing for me, and I hope to share its medicine with you.”

SHORT BIOGRAPHY
WAARI is a descendant of the Waanyi and Kalkutungu
people from the Gulf of Carpentaria Country
and the Mount Isa region south of the Gulf, and of
the Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Manu, Te Ātiawa iwis
from the regions of Taranaki in Aotearoa.
Bringing two worlds, WAARI offers a deep
understanding of being Blak in places wrought
by colonial continuance.
