Cairns, Australia — September 2024 — NorthSite Contemporary Arts is proud to announce an exciting new collaboration with the 23 Sampaguita Artist Collective from the Philippines. Titled “Linear Horizons,” this intercultural printmaking residency will unite creatives from Baguio City, Philippines, with four First Nations artists from Cairns in a printmaking and cultural exchange. Led by NorthSite’s Programs Coordinator, Melania Jack, and facilitated by NorthSite’s Print Coordinator, Dian Darmansjah, this residency will foster cultural exchange and collaboration.
“Linear Horizons” offers a rare and valuable opportunity for local Filipino communities to connect with artists from their homeland, as well as with First Nations artists in Australia, fostering a shared celebration of cultural heritage. This exchange is designed to strengthen pride, identity, and solidarity across borders, enriching the artistic community in both regions.
Jules Caburian, Co founder and creative producer of 23 Sampaguita, shares, “I can see this opportunity will really be beneficial for our artists, not just in terms of their development, but the connections and invitation to travel, meet other artists and be inspired and seen… supported and recognized. It will do a lot to spur confidence for our artists. And hopefully, it’s the start of more dialogue and exchange between Cairns, Baguio, and neighbouring villages. There’s a real synergy between our First Nations cultures – and it’ll be great for the artists to explore that.”
Throughout the residency, NorthSite will host a series of events that facilitate interaction between the visiting artists and the local community. These include welcome and closing events, open studios, and cultural experiences. This engagement not only celebrates culture but also enriches the artistic process with diverse perspectives, fostering meaningful connections between artists and the vibrant local community.
The project is the outcome of Regional // Regional, a network of producers from across Australia and the IndoPacific facilitated by Asialink Arts. The community events associated with the residency will be open to the public and are supported by Cairns Regional Council and Arts Queensland through the Regional Arts Development Fund and the City of the Arts Hero Grant.
