Arts Queensland proudly presents Lighthouse, an innovative body of work by artist Zane Saunders. This project combines traditional printmaking techniques with contemporary animation to create a visual dialogue that bridges ancient cultural narratives and modern artistic expression – presented on Bulmba-ja digital façade.

The works originate from the drypoint printmaking process, where rich coloured pigments are rubbed into plates, transferred to paper, and photographed for animation. Through movement, rhythm, and repetition, abstract geometric patterns emerge—shapes merge and separate, creating depth and shifting meaning as the animation unfolds.

The drawings and prints are contemporary explorations—minimalist in form yet carrying profound messages. They speak as ‘conversations of spirit’, articulating a narrative that is ancient and deeply connected to the preservation of nature, land, and water environments, as well as flora and fauna—all within the cultural realm. My life’s journey, shaped by cultural learnings, insightful experiences, and time spent with respected cultural and spiritual elders, has been both a privilege and an honour.

The animation draws from three works created in 2025 at NorthSite Studios:
• ‘Play II’ – a black collagraph
• ‘Candle’ – a blue drypoint
• ‘Viewpoint’ – a yellow drypoint

My current work focuses on cultural exploration with the hope of reintroducing Aboriginal spiritual practices. I believe this is the missing link in helping Aboriginal people rediscover a true sense of purpose and direction in our custodial role of culture and identity. This foundation is integral to the longevity of our stewardship of cultural interests. It voices a continuance of the Dreaming and our ancestral vision—healthy paths created in our cultural past, enduring into the present and reaching toward distant futures. The print titles employ contemporary descriptive language to situate the work within the broader conversation of Aboriginal cultural space. ”
