Abstract Landscapes

Hannah Parker

The making of Hannah Parker’s printed pieces were inspired by a video about a group of London women in 1950’s and 60’s. Described as housewives who spent time together carving linocuts of imagery about their everyday life, they then handprinted original dynamic designs onto fabrics that they sewed into clothes, curtains, placemats and tablecloths.  They were artists whose representation of domestic items printed onto textiles told the story of their everyday lives in modern abstract design and colour.

Each piece of cloth is unique and through working with lino, the carving, rolling ink and hand-printing is methodical – but allows a subtle difference to each print. Paying tribute to the beautiful print works produced by the women in London, the artist re-interprets the practice by inserting their own themes of place and identity. We all carry stories and wear clothes that express ourselves.

Their format gave me a way to combine landscape with personal and traditional stories; a way to frame icons that resonate for me, that are and were part of my landscape during formative times; ways to play with design elements; and I enjoyed experimenting and layering colours.”
