Cristina Bevilacqua: SKIN

23 August — 19 October 2024

NorthSite Contemporary Arts

SKIN by Cristina Bevilacqua is a powerful photographic project that challenges conventional ideals of beauty and embraces the authenticity of the human form. Presented at NorthSite Contemporary Arts, the exhibition celebrates bodily imperfections and encourages self-acceptance at a time when digital manipulation and Artificial Intelligence increasingly shape our perceptions of identity and worth.

Through raw, intimate portraits, SKIN sparks meaningful dialogue, encouraging viewers to embrace difference and celebrate the human form in all its complexity. The project reflects Bevilacqua’s commitment to using art as a tool for community resilience and social change. Each image serves as a quiet yet impactful act of resistance against unrealistic beauty standards—offering viewers a space for empathy, reflection, and renewed appreciation for the diversity of real bodies.

SKIN is supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), a partnership between the Queensland Government and Cairns Regional Council, underscoring the vital role of regional arts initiatives in fostering inclusive, community-focused storytelling.

The SKIN project is a photographic exploration of the human body, focusing on physical imperfections that are often hidden or stigmatized,’ Bevilacqua explains. ‘My aim is to foster community resilience and drive social change by highlighting the beauty in what society often deems flawed. It’s about creating a dialogue around vulnerability and acceptance.”
