Yvonne Werner

Afloat

13 January — 15 March 2025

YVONNE WERNER | Untitled | 2024 | water colour/ ink/ Japanese paper | (detail)

This body of work is the result of my experimentation and adaption of traditional techniques of Japanese printmaking, particularly printing with watercolour directly on the wooden block and floating ink, or suminagashi. I have adapted these traditional techniques to suit my own way of working, substituting suminagashi for carving and layering the colours when printing as opposed to printing the colours separately with multiple blocks. I have spent many years exploring techniques of non-toxic printmaking. ”

Through experimenting with and adapting traditional processes of Japanese woodblock printing and suminagashi (floating ink), Werner produces unique monotypes and collages that introduce new ways of working and seeing. The artist prints directly off the one block of wood to gradually build up layers of colour that accentuate and modify the marbled forms into fantastical landscapes, a contemporary adaption of ‘the floating world’.
