Byway Collective from the Gold Coast\, Danish Quapoor Art from Townsville and The Ironing Maidens from Cairns will present and discuss and dissect their work selected for the 2022 SUPERCUT program by Outer Space. \nThis will be a small group experience where you can hear about the artists practice and process. The artists will also go through basic explanations of the technology\, software and hardware utilised for the mediums including – digital photography\, animation\, projection mapping\, instrument design and sound art. \nAsk questions\, glean ideas\, start the year with an injection of art inspiration. Get in quick to book into this day as spaces are limited. Saturday 21st January\, 10am – 4pm. \nAbout the Artists: \nBYWAY is an artist collective based on Kombumerri Country / Gold Coast. BYWAY was established upon the shared histories and experiences of three emerging artists living in regional Queensland. Our mission as culturally and linguistically diverse artists\, is to shift the perspective of Australia as one constructed culture and identity. Working collaboratively within a lens-based and digital practice\, our goal is to engage communities and create a platform for highlighting marginalised and under-represented voices. \nBuzz Gardiner of the Byway Collective\, is an Australian-Solomon Island Photographer with a focus on the Arts. Born and raised in Vanuatu – Buzz moved to the Gold Coast 16yrs ago\, where he has lived on and off ever since. Buzzs’ images centre the Melanesian Diaspora. \nDanish Quapoor is a multidisciplinary visual artist based on Gurambilbarra (Townsville). He works across drawings\, illustrative paintings\, ceramics\, textiles\, murals and animations. The artist predominantly employs flat colours and sparse compositions which unify these ostensibly disparate mediums. Balancing personal and familial dichotomies has been a consistent thread in the artist’s life and work. Quapoor has completed numerous solo\, collaborative and group exhibitions and studio residencies throughout eastern Australia. He holds a Master of Arts & Cultural Management (University of Melbourne)\, a Bachelor of Creative Arts\, Honours and a Bachelor of Visual Arts (with Distinction) (both University of Southern Queensland). He has works held in the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery collection and private collections in Australia\, the USA and Germany. The artist is also a curator with interests in recontextualising collections and forging collaborations. \nPatty Preece is a musician\, electronic music producer and sound artist who works with hacked domestic objects to critically explore aesthetic and relational hierarchies at the intersection of sound\, gender and technology. Preece’s practice spans performance\, instrument design\, production and most recently installation. This Cairns based artist creates performance ecosystems using discarded domestic steam irons\, ironing boards\, DIY sensors and electronics. Their live performances engage with augmented domestic objects\, noise and the relationship of performer\, instrument and context. Preece’s creative practice research explores themes of labour\, instrument design\, sonic cyberfeminisms and sound art. \nMelania Jack is a queer\, multiplatform artist working within digital art\, projection\, electronic music and performance platforms.Part of the multi-platform artist duo; The Ironing Maidens\, a project which turns irons and ironing boards into electronic\, musical instruments to explore themes of gender\, domestic labour\, supply chains and technology. Melania uses collaged projection sourced from archival footage to explore gender bias within exploitative labour practices\, particularly within the domestic and technology areas. With a sense of irony and using familiar household items\, the practice aims to deconstruct and question the gender binary and class norms. \nWhat is SUPERCUT? \nSUPERCUT is an Outer Space project supported by the Federal Government’s RISE (Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand) COVID recovery fund and is presented in partnership with Artspace Mackay and NorthSite Contemporary Arts\, Cairns. \nSUPERCUT is focused on creating more opportunities and connecting with regional artists\, arts workers and communities throughout Queensland. The project showcases new works of more than forty Queensland practitioners on billboards across regional Queensland\, in the Outer Space Window Gallery and in a series of curated online exhibitions. \nOuter Space will also deliver a suite of workshop programs with our regional partners that will further support our arts communities in regional and rural centres throughout Queensland. \nFor information about the SUPERCUT billboards\, window gallery exhibitions and workshops\, please visit the Outer Space website. supercutouterspace.org/about

SUMMARY:Presentation and Performance of Iron Instruments
DESCRIPTION:Join The Ironing Maidens for a presentation and performance of their new iron instruments. \nABOUT THIS EVENT\nThe Ironing Maidens turn irons and ironing boards into electronic instruments\, in an attempt to deconstruct stereotypical ideas of gender and its assigned roles. This latest iteration of the project aims to further investigate the relationships we have with objects or instruments\, and the structures that inform the design and the performance of these instruments in an installation setting. The project uses a sonic cyberfeminist lens to critically explore aesthetic and relational hierarchies at the intersection of sound\, gender and technology. Three irons and ironing boards have been hacked and retrofitted with embedded electronic instruments that together create a sonic network. This network of iron instruments listens to each other and the environment and changes their sonic state based on the information they hear. \nA style of granular synthesis is used to obscure the original source signal\, to transform it\, to decouple it from its original context. Order\, context\, and meaning are all destabilised. The ever so familiar and recognisable bleep of a washing machine turning on is split into thousands of tiny micro grains. Micro collages of the sounds of global entrapment\, reimagined in a somewhat other worldly\, noisy new reality. \nThis presentation and live performance will lift the lid on the iron instruments and demonstrate the inner workings of the embedded instruments and their application in an installation setting. \n\nDate: 14th JANUARY 2023\nTime: 11 AM — 12 NOON\nWhere: NorthSite Contemporary Arts at Bulmba-ja\, 96 Abbott Street\, Cairns City \n\n \nBOOK TODAY \n  \nImage: Melania Jack and Patty Preece standing in-front of their exhibition installation ‘Strike’ at NorthSite Contemporary Arts\, 2022. SUMMARY:Embodied Listening and Binaural Recording Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join contemporary artist Melissa Ryke for a one day workshop in Embodied Listening and Binaural Recording.\nSoundwalks form part of Melissa Ryke’s artistic research on embodied listening. Embodied listening can be framed through the discourse of phenomenology and places the body at the centre of lived experience. It highlights how the body is the medium that allows us to enter in relation with the world. Embodied listening is listening and recording as a sensorial haptic experience; using all the senses. During this walk you will be blindfolded and guided through a particular soundscape for deep meditative listening practice that will help open your ears. This will be accompanied by a drawing session that maps out your experience and a group discussion.\nBinaural recording (where our ears are/where our ears aren’t)\nThis part of the workshop is an extension of the soundwalking experience and explores binaural recording practices – a type of recording that replicates how we hear sound. Binaural = with two ears. By following our ears and choreographing different paths we explore a field recording practice through movement\, proximity & distance. A field recording practice can help us reflect on how we each listen differently\, the limits of our ears and technical gear\, active listening\, and uncompromised listening (where we expose our ears to every sound) and reactivate our sense of hearing.\nThis workshop requires no prior knowledge or skills in recording. It would suit those interested in sound\, embodied listening\, binaural recording\, field recording\, meditation and art practice. All ages and abilities welcome.\nAbout the artist:\nMelissa Ryke is an Australian artist currently based between Brussels and Australia. In July 2022 she undertook a residency at AADK. In Lille\, France from 2018-2022 she undertook a state supported studio residency at Le Carré des Artistes. The outcome of the residency were several community projects and events involving the local residents. Ryke studied Fine Arts in both Australia and France and has recently completed the European Postgraduate in Art in Sound at KASK\, Ghent in June 2020.\nRyke’s practice-led research focuses on a critical and playful investigation of the quotidian and experimentation with installation and time based media. Through these mediums the key notion of a bodily experience in space is explored from a phenomenological framework. Recent projects have been focused on embodied listening; listening and recording as a sensorial experience.\n10am – 12.30pm – Soundwalk\n12.30 – 1.30pm – Lunch Break. BYO\n1.30pm – 5pm – Binaural Recording\nWhat to bring:\nComfortable clothes and shoes for walking (slow paced)\nMosquito repellant for general outside use\nSunscreen/Hat\nHeadphones or earbuds\nIf you own a sound recorder\, binaural microphones – bring along.\nIf you have questions about the workshop please contact connect@northsite.org.au \n  \nJoin the workshop \n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk | Carbon_Dating
DESCRIPTION:Join Artists Keith Armstrong\, Daniele Constance\, Donna Davis and Delissa Walker to discuss the underlying concepts and experimental nature of the Carbon_Dating project; exploring collaborations\, process and native grasses. \nDate: 23 September 2022 \nTime: 3PM — 4PM \nLocation: NorthSite at Bulmba-ja\, 96 Abbott Street\, Cairns City 4870 \nFor more information about the Carbon_Dating project visit: http://www.carbondating.art \n  \nCome Along \n  \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nDr Keith Armstrong — Experimental Artist\, Turrbal and Yuggera Country \nKeith Armstrong is an experimental artist profoundly motivated by issues of social and ecological justice. His engaged\, participative practices provoke audiences to comprehend\, envisage and imagine collective pathways towards sustainable futures. He has specialized for over twenty-three years in collaborative\, experimental practices with emphasis upon innovative performance forms\, site-specific electronic arts\, networked interactive installations\, alternative interfaces\, art-science collaborations and socially and ecologically engaged practices. \nDaniele Constance — Socially Engaged Artist\, Kombumerri Country of the Yugambeh Language Region \nDaniele Constance is a participatory artist with a focus on social\, civic and inclusive arts practices\, currently working on the land and water of the Yugambeh Language Region of the Gold Coast\, she creates artistic works that draw from direct experience and social arts practices; often using verbatim\, documentary\, community engages\, site-specific and contemporary arts practices. Her work is informed and shaped by community engaged methodologies; and a deep questioning and reorienting of community and ecology; encompassing the complexnatural environments\, non-human relationships and dynamics we are inherently a part of. Daniele works with care\, transparency and with relationships at the centre of the work. \nDonna Davis — Visual Artist\, Yuggera + Ugarapul Country \nDonna Davis explores the nexus between art and science. She creates new ways of working with ecological concepts and data to develop artworks that capture and create sites of environmental observation. As an artist\, she is intrigued with the idea of connection\, and works across a range of media including sculpture\, installation and digital media to explore connections and relationships with the natural world. She believes that the art/science field provides a powerful catalyst to challenge our discourse\, raise environmental awareness and promote conservation of our ecology: by providing new ways of ‘seeing’ and creating new ‘connections’ in the mind of the viewer. \nDelissa Walker — Artist \nDelissa Walker is a Kuku Yalanji woman from the Mossman/Daintree Rainforest region of Far North Queensland. \n\n  \nCome Along \n  \n\n \n  \nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its arts funding and advisory body.
