SUMMARY:NorthSite - Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NorthSite Contemporary Arts for the exhibition opening of The Ascended by Chantal Fraser. \nChantal Fraser\, a Sāmoan artist from Aotearoa/New Zealand\, explores themes of capitalism and state authority through photography\, performance\, and sculpture\, often incorporating ornamentation and personal adornment. Her work has been exhibited at renowned galleries in Australia\, Canada\, and France. The Ascended is a Griffith University Art Museum touring exhibition\, curated by Naomi Evans. \nThis opening event will be enhanced by Welcome to Country by Minjil and a live performance from the Pasifika Collective Group\, with the rhythmic and cultural expressions of traditional Samoan dance. Catering by Freshies Island Food\, a family-owned business\, carrying the culinary food influences of Polynesian ancestors with a modern twist.  \nJoin us for a unique event where we celebrate Chantal’s work while savouring live performances and Oceanic cuisine together. \n \nRSVP \n\nThe Ascended by Chantal Fraser\nThe Ascended exhibition crystallises Fraser’s exploration of power and class through her anti-colonial and anti-capitalist strategies\, developing a theory that links ornamentation\, personal protective devices and protest aesthetics as means to subvert and liberate identities. Fraser’s multimedia practice has garnered significant acclaim within Australian contemporary art and reflects the complexity of lived experiences for diasporic Sāmoan and Pasifika communities. \n\n\nChantal Fraser: The Ascended is a Griffith University Art Museum touring exhibition\, curated by Naomi Evans.\nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its arts funding and advisory body. This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

SUMMARY:NorthSite - Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Start your weekend with art and celebrate these exhibition openings at NorthSite; MANdala by Geoffrey Schmidt\, scattered massive by John Pagnozzi and Waanji Away by Jack Wilkie-Jans. \nJoin us on Friday\, 12th May 2023 \n\n5.30PM Event Opens\, Bar Open\n6:00PM Opening speeches\n7:30PM Event close\n\nBOOK TODAY \nWe charge a ticket fee to ensure attendance. If the ticket price is a financial barrier to attending\, please email : connect@northsite.org.au \n\nMore Information\nGeoffrey Schmidt\, MANdala – Gallery 2\nMANdala is an establishment of a sacred space\, a focusing of attention\, a symbol of the universe and a meditative representation of higher thought. This work is an embracing and balancing of the male body with the acceptance of self and identity. The blending of the body\, mind\, environment and established systems. The Mandala works as an equalizing and quieting tool to establish a resting point. The images are a centered and symmetrical balancing of the human condition\, personalized psychology and systems of existence. \nJohn Pagnozzi\, scattered massive – Long Wall\nscattered massive presents a collection of work that is about the practice of drawing. Grounded in everyday or found material\, crayon\, house paint\, spray paint\, sand\, textile; the work approaches drawing as a process of spontaneous object making. It is influenced by ambiguity\, mood and poetry. \nJack Wilkie-Jans\, Waanji Away – Foyer Wall\nGrowing up in Weipa\, on the Western Cape of Cape York Peninsula\, remain some of the most wonderful years of my life—close to family and growing up with my siblings\, cousins and friends with so much freedom. I consider myself enriched by this time and by the fact these years\, those places and [most of] those people are still very much part of my life today. But\, there were times when the freedoms I enjoyed\, were not afforded to my Old People. \nImages courtesy of the artists’. Left to right: Geoffrey Schmidt\, John Pagnozzi\, Jack Wilkie-Jans.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at NorthSite for the opening event of Exploring Giant Molecules and a special performance by the artist Sandra Selig. \nExploring Giant Molecules is the largest solo exhibition of Queensland artist Sandra Selig\, bringing together key examples of her interdisciplinary projects from the past two decades. \nSelig works at the intersection of visual art and experimental music\, using humble materials such as thread\, paper\, light and sound to articulate intangible notions of form\, space and time. \nThe exhibition presents seven projects that address the dominant concerns\, materials and forms of Selig’s ongoing bodies of work\, including the artist’s pendulum salt drawings that transform throughout the exhibition. Also included is a new thread installation that responds to the gallery’s architecture and spider webs captured on paper—projects that have evolved organically over time and in response to the spaces Selig works and exhibits in. \n  \nJoin us on Friday\, 28th April 2023 \n5.30PM Event Opens\, Bar Open \n6:00PM Welcome to Country \n6:30PM—7:15PM Performance \n7:30PM Event close \n  \n\n \nBOOK HERE \n  \nWe charge a ticket fee to ensure attendance. SUMMARY:Supercut Artist Talks and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Looking for an injection of art inspiration for 2023? Want idea’s on getting your arts practice humming in this new year? Want to meet likeminded artists and see how you can take your arts practice into the digital realm? \nNext Saturday 21st join us for a day of workshops\, demonstrations and artist talks by 3 artists/groups. Byway Collective from the Gold Coast\, Danish Quapoor Art from Townsville and The Ironing Maidens from Cairns will present and discuss and dissect their work selected for the 2022 SUPERCUT program by Outer Space. \nThis will be a small group experience where you can hear about the artists practice and process. The artists will also go through basic explanations of the technology\, software and hardware utilised for the mediums including – digital photography\, animation\, projection mapping\, instrument design and sound art. \nAsk questions\, glean ideas\, start the year with an injection of art inspiration. Get in quick to book into this day as spaces are limited. Saturday 21st January\, 10am – 4pm. \nAbout the Artists: \nBYWAY is an artist collective based on Kombumerri Country / Gold Coast. BYWAY was established upon the shared histories and experiences of three emerging artists living in regional Queensland. Our mission as culturally and linguistically diverse artists\, is to shift the perspective of Australia as one constructed culture and identity. Working collaboratively within a lens-based and digital practice\, our goal is to engage communities and create a platform for highlighting marginalised and under-represented voices. \nBuzz Gardiner of the Byway Collective\, is an Australian-Solomon Island Photographer with a focus on the Arts. Born and raised in Vanuatu – Buzz moved to the Gold Coast 16yrs ago\, where he has lived on and off ever since. Buzzs’ images centre the Melanesian Diaspora. \nDanish Quapoor is a multidisciplinary visual artist based on Gurambilbarra (Townsville). He works across drawings\, illustrative paintings\, ceramics\, textiles\, murals and animations. The artist predominantly employs flat colours and sparse compositions which unify these ostensibly disparate mediums. Balancing personal and familial dichotomies has been a consistent thread in the artist’s life and work. Quapoor has completed numerous solo\, collaborative and group exhibitions and studio residencies throughout eastern Australia. He holds a Master of Arts & Cultural Management (University of Melbourne)\, a Bachelor of Creative Arts\, Honours and a Bachelor of Visual Arts (with Distinction) (both University of Southern Queensland). He has works held in the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery collection and private collections in Australia\, the USA and Germany. The artist is also a curator with interests in recontextualising collections and forging collaborations. \nPatty Preece is a musician\, electronic music producer and sound artist who works with hacked domestic objects to critically explore aesthetic and relational hierarchies at the intersection of sound\, gender and technology. Preece’s practice spans performance\, instrument design\, production and most recently installation. This Cairns based artist creates performance ecosystems using discarded domestic steam irons\, ironing boards\, DIY sensors and electronics. Their live performances engage with augmented domestic objects\, noise and the relationship of performer\, instrument and context. Preece’s creative practice research explores themes of labour\, instrument design\, sonic cyberfeminisms and sound art. \nMelania Jack is a queer\, multiplatform artist working within digital art\, projection\, electronic music and performance platforms.Part of the multi-platform artist duo; The Ironing Maidens\, a project which turns irons and ironing boards into electronic\, musical instruments to explore themes of gender\, domestic labour\, supply chains and technology. Melania uses collaged projection sourced from archival footage to explore gender bias within exploitative labour practices\, particularly within the domestic and technology areas. With a sense of irony and using familiar household items\, the practice aims to deconstruct and question the gender binary and class norms. \nWhat is SUPERCUT? \nSUPERCUT is an Outer Space project supported by the Federal Government’s RISE (Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand) COVID recovery fund and is presented in partnership with Artspace Mackay and NorthSite Contemporary Arts\, Cairns. \nSUPERCUT is focused on creating more opportunities and connecting with regional artists\, arts workers and communities throughout Queensland. The project showcases new works of more than forty Queensland practitioners on billboards across regional Queensland\, in the Outer Space Window Gallery and in a series of curated online exhibitions. \nOuter Space will also deliver a suite of workshop programs with our regional partners that will further support our arts communities in regional and rural centres throughout Queensland. \nFor information about the SUPERCUT billboards\, window gallery exhibitions and workshops\, please visit the Outer Space website. supercutouterspace.org/about

SUMMARY:Presentation and Performance of Iron Instruments
DESCRIPTION:Join The Ironing Maidens for a presentation and performance of their new iron instruments. \nABOUT THIS EVENT\nThe Ironing Maidens turn irons and ironing boards into electronic instruments\, in an attempt to deconstruct stereotypical ideas of gender and its assigned roles. This latest iteration of the project aims to further investigate the relationships we have with objects or instruments\, and the structures that inform the design and the performance of these instruments in an installation setting. The project uses a sonic cyberfeminist lens to critically explore aesthetic and relational hierarchies at the intersection of sound\, gender and technology. Three irons and ironing boards have been hacked and retrofitted with embedded electronic instruments that together create a sonic network. This network of iron instruments listens to each other and the environment and changes their sonic state based on the information they hear. \nA style of granular synthesis is used to obscure the original source signal\, to transform it\, to decouple it from its original context. Order\, context\, and meaning are all destabilised. The ever so familiar and recognisable bleep of a washing machine turning on is split into thousands of tiny micro grains. Micro collages of the sounds of global entrapment\, reimagined in a somewhat other worldly\, noisy new reality. \nThis presentation and live performance will lift the lid on the iron instruments and demonstrate the inner workings of the embedded instruments and their application in an installation setting. \n\nDate: 14th JANUARY 2023\nTime: 11 AM — 12 NOON\nWhere: NorthSite Contemporary Arts at Bulmba-ja\, 96 Abbott Street\, Cairns City \n\n \nBOOK TODAY \n  \nImage: Melania Jack and Patty Preece standing in-front of their exhibition installation ‘Strike’ at NorthSite Contemporary Arts\, 2022.
