SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Kate Robertson and special Guest Chief Alex Dawia
DESCRIPTION:Join Artist Kate Robertson and Chief Alex Dawia to discuss her exhibition Kuna Siuwai Pokong – Medicinal plants from Siwai\nAbout this event \nNorthSite Contemporary Arts Invites you to walk through Kate Robertson’s exhibition\, Kuna Siuwai Pokong – Medicinal plants from Siwai with the artist\, discuss her artworks in discuss her artworks in concept and presentation. \nThis exhibition chronicles plants and their medicinal properties from the Siwai region of Bougainville Island\, an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea\, through photographic light recordings. Concerned with the erosion of tacit traditional medicinal knowledge\, Chief Alex Dawia of the Taa Lupumoiku Clan approached and invited Australian artist Kate Robertson to chronicle Siwai plant knowledge for preservation. Chief Jeffrey Noro of the Rura Clan\, also from Siwai\, joined their efforts\, motivated by similar concerns to preserve tacit knowledge systems and provide positive recognition of their region. \nOver five years\, the project has evolved to include photographic prints\, an embroidered fabric panel and a published book to explore how cross-cultural projects can provide mutual benefits through repatriation and transparency. Ultimately\, it is a holistic inquiry into how we might work together across territorial borders\, cultures and skillsets to achieve a shared future. \nHo mi ho kui ngung pekong tokunoi riku\, hoko kukarei ho kui pokong tokunoi rihetong. Uwa ko\, hoi nekong hongowa’a nahamong\, ho kui pokong mi\, ho pokong itikai yi haha’a roro ngo tawah. Ho korokoro rori hungyo\, hoko musimang nekong toku topo inakarei.\n(When you lose the traditional name\, you lose the knowledge of the plant because the traditional name describes the functionality of the plant. Therefore\, when we lose our language\, we are bound to lose our biodiversity because we can no longer find the value in each plant). ”\n– Dr Jeffrey Noro \nArrive at NorthSite\, Bulmba-ja 96 Abbott St\, Cairns City at 11.45am for 12pm talk in gallery 2.\nPlease sanitise and register your details at the entrance for COVID Contact Tracing via paper slip or QR code.\nRSVP via Eventbrite is necessary for all attendees. \nWe look forward to seeing you here!\nNorthSite Team

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Donna Davis and special guest Prof.Darren Crayn Director Australian Tropical Herbarium
DESCRIPTION:Join Artist Donna Davis and Prof. Darren Crayn\, Director Australian Tropical Herbarium to discuss her exhibition’ When a Tree Falls’ \nNorthSite Contemporary Arts Invites you to walk through Donna Davis’s exhibition\, When a Tree Falls with the artist\, discuss her artworks in concept and presentation. \nThis playful yet reflective exhibition speaks of climate-induced flora displacement\, hidden ecological players and the human; exploring imagined ecological-adaptations\, ecological hierarchies and the idea of kin. \nThe works respond to current artist-residencies embedded within state and international science projects based in far North Queensland that explore the issue of rising temperatures from different perspectives. There is a long history of artists documenting scientific endeavors\, however this exhibition extends beyond documentation\, using sculpture\, stop-frame animation\, digital media\, and installation to explore interspecies relationships and perceived notions of hierarchy within ecological systems. \n“Anthropogenic disturbance is the reason for the current climate situation; as an artist I seek to understand the ecological complexity and explore our role as humans to alleviate and remedy the disorder?” \nArrive at NorthSite\, Bulmba-ja 96 Abbott St\, Cairns City at 10.45am for 11am talk in the main gallery.\nPlease sanitise and register your details at the entrance for COVID Contact Tracing via paper slip or QR code.\nFollow the Eventbrite link to reserve your ticket. \nWe look forward to seeing you! \nNorthSite Team

\nDonna Davis When A Tree Falls \nThis playful yet reflective exhibition speaks of climate-induced flora displacement\, hidden ecological players and the human; exploring imagined ecological-adaptations\, ecological hierarchies and the idea of kin. \nBoth residencies examine the issue of climate change; the Tropical Mountain Plant Science project\, led by the Australian Tropical Herbarium\, is a result of consequence\, undertaking a real-time rescue mission to save vulnerable mountain top flora from extinction with project partners cultivating the rescued plants in temperate zone Botanic Gardens\, thousands of kilometres from their natural home. Whereas\, the Wood\, Termite\, Fungi project\, led by George Washington University\, examines hidden players in the carbon cycle to model impacts of rising temperatures on the decomposition cycle. \nThe main theme that flows through the exhibition is ecological cause and effect through a multi-species lens\, examining human and nonhuman hierarchal structures; ultimately seeking to empower a call to action to reconsider how we treat our kin\, of all species. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to the Gallery! \nNorthSite Team \nImage Credits: \nDonna Davis\, Displaced [TransPLANT IV] (detail)\, (animation still)\, 2021\, single channel video installation \nKate Robertson\, HONDO (detail)\, 2016\, archival pigment print\, 28 x 48 cm

SUMMARY:Rose Rigley Performances - every Friday
DESCRIPTION:ROSE RIGLEY\nObject Performances\nWitness artist Rose Rigley sort through sentimental items from her mother’s archive\, within the NorthSite exhibition space each Friday during the exhibition. \nExhibition runs: 2 OCTOBER — 5 DECEMBER 2020 | Performances Fridays 10am – 12pm & 1pm -3pm.\n9th October \n16th October \n23rd October \n30th October \n6th November \n20th November \n“OBJECT is a collaborative project which asked the community to provide their keepsakes as the basis for the drawings and artworks in this exhibition. The cataloguing of these numerous objects references a biographical\, lived memory. Yet in themselves\, these items are mute\, thought-less and inanimate things removed from their everyday context. Although the special objects are linked with personal histories\, their status as keepsakes create questions regarding social recollection and archiving practices. Objects can remind us of another time and place. They ‘speak’ of love and loss. The fullness of their presence reminds us of what is missing. We activate them with memory and meaning and\, in return\, they become our memory-keepers.” Rose Rigley

SUMMARY:Rite of Passage Online Artist Talks
DESCRIPTION:As travel and gatherings have become less accessible this year\, we bring you online discussions with the artists in Rite of Passage as they discuss their artworks and their practice with curator Shannon Brett. \nTune in each week and share with those you think should hear. \nRite of Passage is a visionary group exhibition that developed as a response to the significance of the year 2020 – 250 years since James Cook first landed in Australia.  The exhibition aims to reframe the way that we perceive this year in our historyRite of Passage showcases the strength of autobiographical work by eleven contemporary Aboriginal artists from across Australia. \nArtists include Glennys Briggs\, Megan Cope\, Nici Cumpston\, Karla Dickens\, Julie Gough\, Lola Greeno\, Leah King-Smith\, Jenna Lee\, Carol McGregor\, Mandy Quadrio\, and Judy Watson.
