SUMMARY:Photographic Books: an Intro to DIY Bookmaking
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to book design using a series of photographs to make a finished photo book. \nIn this workshop you will be guided to use the online publication design program Blurb to create a photo book – design\, publish\, print and distribute.\nAishah Kenton and Sean Davey from the Pacific Centre for Photographic Arts will share some of their favourite tangible objects – photographic artist books and work with you to use accessible tools to combine your images and design a book from your images that you can produce as a one-off item or re-print to share with family\, friends and fans.\nLearn formatting\, technical and production considerations and start your own digital photo book in the workshop. This is a great skill for artists and creatives to learn as it can be used as a creative and artistic tool but also as a professional folio to communicate your practice. \n“The great thing about these online photographic book-publishing programs is that they allow you to more easily create your own book. The fact that as an artist\, you can now publish your own book with low costs\, anytime after you’ve created a body of work\, is incredible. In doing this\, it helps you visualise your work in a final product. The guidelines in online book publishing programs make it a lot easier to format and provide a huge introduction to book design principles.” Aishah Kenton \nItems supplied:\nExisting photo books for inspiration and demonstration\, wifi\,5 hrs tuition\, tea\, coffee and lunch\nWhat to bring:\nLaptop with Blurb software downloaded\nAccess to all the digital images you wish to work with \nDate: Tuesday 22 February\, 10am – 4pm.\nWhere: Studio C\, NorthSite at Bulmba-ja. Please arrive at 9:45pm to settle in.\nCost: $120 pp. NorthSite Members pay $20pp (discounted rate of $100). Phone to book 0740509494.\nMax 10 participants. \nBook Here

SUMMARY:Your Story: Sequencing and narrative with personal photography
DESCRIPTION:Participants will work with a selection of 50+ existing personal images\, arranging their photographs in a folio of fresh image sequences. \n  \nWho\, What\, Why: \nPhotographers Sean Davey and Aishah Kenton of the Pacific Centre for Photographic Arts will guide you through a range of considerations and approaches to arrive at an intimate folio of personal photographs. \nEach participant will create a new series of photographs presented in a cohesive folio\, that communicates narrative and feeling solely through image. This activity demonstrates the power of storytelling through incidental photography of everyday life and shows that each of us has a unique position\, aesthetic\, and perspective to share. \n“This program gives people an awareness that each of us is likely to have a body of photographic work in our phones or in an old photo album on the shelf\, incidental work\, work that explores where they are\, their life. Through considered selection\, aesthetic and subjective considerations\, inclusion and reduction\, everyday photographs can be combined and bought into a new realm of communication.” Sean Davey \n  \nItems supplied: \nFolios\, paper\, pencils\, 5 hrs tuition\, tea\, coffee and lunch. \n  \nWhat to bring: \nPhysical photos – participants are required to bring 50 – 100 diverse photographs. \nSuggested content: old family photo albums\, film packets of travel shots\, found photo collections or digital images from your phone camera roll to be pre-printed as 6 x 4 images. Ultimately\, it is a holistic inquiry into how we might work together across territorial borders\, cultures and skillsets to achieve a shared future. \nDonna Davis When A Tree Falls \nThis playful yet reflective exhibition speaks of climate-induced flora displacement\, hidden ecological players and the human; exploring imagined ecological-adaptations\, ecological hierarchies and the idea of kin. \nThe works respond to current artist-residencies embedded within state and international science projects based in far North Queensland that explore the issue of rising temperatures from different perspectives. There is a long history of artists documenting scientific endeavors\, however this exhibition extends beyond documentation\, using sculpture\, stop-frame animation\, digital media\, and installation to explore interspecies relationships and perceived notions of hierarchy within ecological systems. \nBoth residencies examine the issue of climate change; the Tropical Mountain Plant Science project\, led by the Australian Tropical Herbarium\, is a result of consequence\, undertaking a real-time rescue mission to save vulnerable mountain top flora from extinction with project partners cultivating the rescued plants in temperate zone Botanic Gardens\, thousands of kilometres from their natural home. Whereas\, the Wood\, Termite\, Fungi project\, led by George Washington University\, examines hidden players in the carbon cycle to model impacts of rising temperatures on the decomposition cycle. \nThe main theme that flows through the exhibition is ecological cause and effect through a multi-species lens\, examining human and nonhuman hierarchal structures; ultimately seeking to empower a call to action to reconsider how we treat our kin\, of all species. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to the Gallery! \nNorthSite Team \nImage Credits: \nDonna Davis\, Displaced [TransPLANT IV] (detail)\, (animation still)\, 2021\, single channel video installation \nKate Robertson\, HONDO (detail)\, 2016\, archival pigment print\, 28 x 48 cm

SUMMARY:Rose Rigley Performances - every Friday
DESCRIPTION:ROSE RIGLEY\nObject Performances\nWitness artist Rose Rigley sort through sentimental items from her mother’s archive\, within the NorthSite exhibition space each Friday during the exhibition. \nExhibition runs: 2 OCTOBER — 5 DECEMBER 2020 | Performances Fridays 10am – 12pm & 1pm -3pm.\n9th October \n16th October \n23rd October \n30th October \n6th November \n20th November \n“OBJECT is a collaborative project which asked the community to provide their keepsakes as the basis for the drawings and artworks in this exhibition. The cataloguing of these numerous objects references a biographical\, lived memory. Yet in themselves\, these items are mute\, thought-less and inanimate things removed from their everyday context. Although the special objects are linked with personal histories\, their status as keepsakes create questions regarding social recollection and archiving practices. Objects can remind us of another time and place. They ‘speak’ of love and loss. The fullness of their presence reminds us of what is missing. We activate them with memory and meaning and\, in return\, they become our memory-keepers.” Rose Rigley
