Guests are invited to experience this powerful exhibition alongside the curators\, artists\, and project team\, and to share in conversations that honour Yidinji history\, resilience\, and cultural continuity. \nWe can’t wait to see you\, please RSVP below for catering purposes. \n \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Ghosts of Lani Mulgrave Blair marks 150 years of resilience\, resistance\, and cultural survival for the Yidinji Nation since the colonial occupation of Gimuy/Cairns. As part of a year-long program of events\, the exhibition invites audiences to walk alongside Yidinji leaders and community members as they reclaim history through storytelling\, language revitalisation\, and the enduring presence of cultural knowledge\, objects\, and traditions. Bringing together historical archives with contemporary artistic practice\, the exhibition offers a profound reflection on memory\, identity\, and the ongoing work of cultural restoration. \nAt the heart of the exhibition is the story of Lani Mulgrave Blair (1883–1900)\, a Yidinji boy taken from the Mulgrave River during a period of violent frontier conflict and trafficked to Melbourne\, where he was raised within colonial society. His story survives through photographs\, newspaper accounts\, paintings\, and monuments\, but also through Yidinji oral histories and the living knowledge of Country. Through new works by Yidinji artist Paul Bong\, Jaymen Drahm\, the experimental film Lani by Demons Land Collective\, and Carl Fourmile‘s evocative sound work Yidinji Lament\, the exhibition returns Lani’s story to Yidinji Country\, confronting the legacies of colonisation while celebrating the enduring strength\, sovereignty\, and continuity of Yidinji culture.

Through painting and sculptural installation\, the exhibition shares stories of growing up by the ocean and rainforest\, living in a tin humpy with her parents and siblings\, and the experiences that continue to inspire her artistic practice today. \n“Yarrabah is the home of the Gungganji people who are my people. Living and growing in Yarrabah and on the beach gave me the opportunity to live and learn about the ocean and the rainforest. DESCRIPTION:NorthSite Contemporary Arts invites families to a playful\, hands-on Edible Printing Pop-Up Workshop this Saturday morning.  \nLed by visiting printmaker Alfin Agnuba from Yogyakarta\, this unique workshop blends art-making with cooking — transforming traditional printmaking into something you can actually eat.  \nUsing spring roll pastry as your “paper” and chocolate as your “ink\,” participants will create edible prints inspired by Javanese batik patterns. Choose from a selection of designs\, print your own work\, and then cook it to enjoy.  \nThis is a relaxed\, interactive experience designed especially for families — a chance to make\, share\, snack\, and connect through creativity. He is an active member of the Krack! Printmaking Collective\, where he works as a master printer and leads studio programs including workshops\, public programs\, and edition printing.  \nAlfin’s work explores printmaking as both a technical process and a language for storytelling\, often drawing on Indonesian history and collective memory. His experimental approach reimagines the medium through unconventional materials and methods — including edible printing\, where food becomes both surface and substance.  \nThis workshop forms part of NorthSite’s ongoing cultural exchange with Yogyakarta.

DESCRIPTION:NorthSite Contemporary Arts and Padepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiardja (PSBK) present a special screening of Sitting with the Sea (Dialog Lensa #6) — an immersive experience in image and live sound. \nPhotographer Vickram Sombu (Photographer and filmmaker from Kupang\, East Nusa Tenggara) shares images created during his time with the community of Lamalera in East Nusa Tenggara\, tracing their profound connection to Mother Sea (Ina Lefa). Developed with Yogyakarta-based photographer and curator Kurniadi Widodo\, the work journeys across oceans from Lamelera to Yogyakarta to Gimuy/Cairns\, carrying stories of culture\, survival\, and reverence. \nAustralian mulitdiscipinary artists Melania Jack and Patty Preece (The Ironing Maidens) build upon Sombu’s photography to create a live\, immersive soundscape that dissolves the boundaries between stage\, performer\, and audience.  Sound and light moves through the space\, inviting multiple perspectives and shared presence. \nPresented at the Tanks Arts Centre by NorthSite in April 2026\, this event celebrates an ongoing cross-cultural exchange between Far North Queensland and Yogyakarta.  \nSit together. After the performance\, join the artists for a discussion exploring the development of the work and the meanings it holds for us as international audiences. \nAbout PSBK\nPSBK (Padepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiardja) is a place-based arts centre that champions the arts as a vital necessity for humanity and the advancement of culture. Established in 1978 to support a curriculum-driven residency program for Indonesian creative practitioners\, PSBK continues the late Bagong Kussudiardja’s commitment to artistic innovation\, creative learning\, access to the arts\, and pushing strategies in new directions. Since 2009\, significant physical transformations have transpired to ensure high-quality\, accessible spaces that nurture the relational development between the arts\, artists\, and communities through creative learning and art appreciation activities. \nPSBK was founded with the DNA of education—both education in the arts and education through the arts. Recognising art as essential for humanity and cultural advancement\, PSBK strives to ensure quality and accessibility to art venues as essential resource centres. NorthSite is proud to present two short films from Indonesia’s PSBK as part of the Dialog Lensa project: SERAKAH and BERSIAR SINAR. One screening will feature live musical accompaniment by Yogyakarta-based composer and musician Jenar Kidjing. Come along to experience the power of photography translated to the stage\, as we prepare to bring Australian artists into the cross-cultural collaboration in 2026. Through projections\, sculptures\, paintings\, and paper cuttings\, it invites visitors into an environment shaped by the landscapes of Tokyo and Cairns\, where transformation and renewal are constantly in motion. Artists Tetsuya Tabata and Mariana Verdaasdonk merge their complementary practices to create a contemplative space that celebrates cycles of change\, growth\, and rebirth.  \nSunshine Noir | Hannah Murray \nSunshine Noir explores the dynamic tension and interdependence between light and shadow\, reflecting the paradoxes of tropical life where beauty and darkness coexist. Influenced by Dutch still life\, Ukiyo traditions\, and Surrealism\, the works blur reality and imagination through layered\, unexpected still-life compositions drawn from Far North Queensland. Using vessels\, glassware\, and tropical flora and fauna as metaphors\, the series reflects on ephemeral beauty and the impermanence of life and the natural world.  \nDialog Lensa 1&2: ‘SERAKAH’ & ‘BERSIAR SINAR’ Special Screening and Performance\nNorthSite Contemporary Arts and PSBK present a special screening of SERAKAH and BERSIAR SINAR\, highlighting an ongoing cross-cultural exchange between Far North Queensland and Yogyakarta. This event celebrates a growing partnership supported through Artslink’s Regional // Regional initiative and shares early works from the Dialog Lensa platform. It also offers audiences a glimpse into the development of Dialog Lensa #6\, which will continue to evolve through this multi-year creative connection. Together\, these screenings invite Cairns audiences to experience powerful performative works that merge photography\, performance\, sound\, and moving image while contributing to a rich and expanding artistic dialogue between the two regions. \n  \n  \n

Transmission. Protection. This special afternoon will feature artist talks\, a live performance\, and the chance to connect with like-minded art lovers while discovering the powerful ideas and practices shaping contemporary art in our region. \nCultural Knowledge is Currency: Generation. Transmission. Protection. is a new exhibition led by Yidinji Traditional Owner and cultural leader Carl Fourmile\, in collaboration with Minjil. Centred on the revival and reinterpretation of the Yidinji people’s unique square-cut nautilus shell regalia\, the project extends traditional knowledge into the present through hands-on fabrication\, storytelling\, and creative documentary-making. This body of work celebrates both the resilience of Yidinji cultural practices and the adaptability of contemporary art in maintaining living traditions. \nIntimate Worlds II brings together NorthSite makers whose practices are grounded in material exploration\, slow processes\, and thoughtful making. At Taloi’s request\, this exhibition included work by her mother Marilyn\, the recipient of the letter. \n\nBringing together archives\, video\, and paintings\, Shared Aspirations is presented at a critical juncture in Bougainville’s journey towards Independence inviting us to share the art of two women whose lives have both contributed to – and been shaped by – the Bougainville’s people’s pursuit of cultural\, economic and political self- determination. \nView more >> \nMeet the Artists\n \nTaloi Havini (b\, 1981\, Arawa\, Autonomous Region of Bougainville\, Papua New Guinea; lives and works in Brisbane\, Australia) is an interdisciplinary artist working across media from sculpture\, photography\, moving image\, installation and sound.  A descendant from the Nakas clan of the Hakö (Haku) people of northeastern Buka\, her research practice is shaped by her matrilineal ties to her land in Bougainville and studies surrounding Indigenous Knowledge Systems and museum collections. Havini creates immersive and site-specific experiences\, often reflecting on ideas of transmission\, mapping and representation. She continues to work collaboratively on cultural heritage projects with communities in Bougainville. \nHavini’s artwork is held in public and private collections including TBA21–Academy\, Sharjah Art Foundation\, Art Gallery of New South Wales\, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA)\, National Gallery of Victoria and KADIST\, San Francisco\, CA\, USA. \nShe has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions exhibiting with the  Artspace\, Sydney; Palais de Tokyo\, Paris; Sharjah Biennial 13\, UAE; 3rd Aichi Triennial\, Nagoya; 8th & 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art\, QAGOMA\, Brisbane; TBA21’s Ocean Space\, Venezia; Barbican Centre\, London\, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki\, NZ\, the Honolulu Biennial\, HA\, ARTES Mundi\, 10\, Wales and the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York. \n \nMarilyn Havini OM\, (b.1948\, Sydney Australia\, lives and works in Ngakobul Village\, Buka Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville). Adopted into her husband Moses Havini’s Nakas clan in 1970 with the traditional name of Taleo\, Marilyn works in oils to explore  life and culture immersed within the environment of her adopted homeland. Traversing periods of conflict through to aspirations for a Independent future her works provide an important document of Bougainvillean history as one tied to the land. \nMarilyn’s works are held in public and private collections including the Bougainville Parliament and senior members of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville government. She was the designer of the Bougainville flag\, has won  paintings awards in Papua New Guinea and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions including most recently: Shared Aspirations: Taloi Havini\, Dunedin Public Art Gallery\, 2023; 15 Artists\, Redcliffe Regional Art Gallery\, 2022 and A Courage for Peace\, Australian War Memorial\, Canberra\, 2019. \nRuth McDougal | Photo: Digine Dickson courtesy of Haus Yuriyal. \nRuth McDougall is an Australian born curator working with artists and communities across Oceania. She has worked as part of the Asia Pacific Art Department at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art since 2003\, caring for stories\, artworks\, relationships and conversations. As Curator\, Pacific Art she led the exhibitions and publications for sis: Pacific Art 1980-2023; No 1 Neighbour: Art in Papua New Guinea 1966-2016 and Threads: Contemporary Textiles and the Social Fabric. She has been a key member of the Curatorial team for seven APTs as well as the Pacific Textiles Project in APT 5. Prior to this she was Exhibitions Coordinator\, Institute of Modern Art (1999-2003) and Curatorial Officer\, University of Queensland Art Museum (1996-99) where she curated the touring exhibition\, publication and conference Close Ties; Kay Lawrence and Marcel Marois. McDougall holds a Masters in Visual Arts from Goldsmiths College\, London and was a recipient of the inaugural round of Samstag Visual Arts Scholarships in 1994. In 2013\, she undertook a Churchill Fellowship to research Pacific Textiles. In 2024 she was awarded the ICOM Individual Award for her services to contemporary Pacific Art in Australia.

The shroud is intended to be an apparition emergent from a long buried boat ruin. SUMMARY:Drypoint Printmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Participants will be introduced to fine art printmaking mediums (Intaglio\, Relief\, Planographic & Stencil). They will learn about the Intaglio printmaking medium through their own creation of a multi-plate drypoint print utilizing plexiglass plates. \nThe classes will cover: \n\nOverview of the conventional fine art printing mediums\n\n\nDemonstration and discussion of materials & equipment used in Intaglio printing.\n\n\nDesigning and drawing an image\n\n\nCreating an image on the plate\, utilizing a variety of tools and mediums\n\n\nInking and printing a plate\, using the conventional intaglio method\n\n\nDemonstrate different materials that can be used for a drypoint plate\n\n\nSet up press and registration\, for multi-plate print\n\nThis workshop is suitable for all levels of experience\, no previous skills in the printmaking mediums required. \n  \nWorkshop fee \nThe Price covers both dates – Monday 16 September and Mon 23 September 2024\, 5:30pm – 8:00pm \nYou need to be able to attend both dates \nThe workshop fee includes all materials\, including fine art rag paper\, inks\, plates and use of tools and equipment whilst in the studio. \nThis process uses non toxic products. \n  \nBursary places available for those experiencing financial hardship – email printmaking@northsite.org.au to apply for access to the workshop.

What are the steps towards achieving your goals? \nIf you missed the previous session there will be a recap of the main points and themes. \nThis will be a smaller group and is for people who are interested in exhibiting in Cairns\, in other QLD based galleries\, or have other aspirations we can support you with. \nThe format will be: \n5.30-6.30pm – Information on the opportunities currently available – for example in QLD. Discussion on what steps are appropriate to your career stage. Creative Activities on setting your goals. \n6.30-7.30pm – One on one sessions about your plan and what support you need. \nProviding real-world opportunities\,  “Artistic Directions” empowers artists and arts workers to chart their course in the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art. \nIn the ticketing process you can specify where you are currently at\, what you might need support with.
