SUMMARY:Embodied Listening and Binaural Recording Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join contemporary artist Melissa Ryke for a one day workshop in Embodied Listening and Binaural Recording.\nSoundwalks form part of Melissa Ryke’s artistic research on embodied listening. Embodied listening can be framed through the discourse of phenomenology and places the body at the centre of lived experience. It highlights how the body is the medium that allows us to enter in relation with the world. Embodied listening is listening and recording as a sensorial haptic experience; using all the senses. During this walk you will be blindfolded and guided through a particular soundscape for deep meditative listening practice that will help open your ears. This will be accompanied by a drawing session that maps out your experience and a group discussion.\nBinaural recording (where our ears are/where our ears aren’t)\nThis part of the workshop is an extension of the soundwalking experience and explores binaural recording practices – a type of recording that replicates how we hear sound. Binaural = with two ears. By following our ears and choreographing different paths we explore a field recording practice through movement\, proximity & distance. A field recording practice can help us reflect on how we each listen differently\, the limits of our ears and technical gear\, active listening\, and uncompromised listening (where we expose our ears to every sound) and reactivate our sense of hearing.\nThis workshop requires no prior knowledge or skills in recording. It would suit those interested in sound\, embodied listening\, binaural recording\, field recording\, meditation and art practice. All ages and abilities welcome.\nAbout the artist:\nMelissa Ryke is an Australian artist currently based between Brussels and Australia. In July 2022 she undertook a residency at AADK. In Lille\, France from 2018-2022 she undertook a state supported studio residency at Le Carré des Artistes. The outcome of the residency were several community projects and events involving the local residents. Ryke studied Fine Arts in both Australia and France and has recently completed the European Postgraduate in Art in Sound at KASK\, Ghent in June 2020.\nRyke’s practice-led research focuses on a critical and playful investigation of the quotidian and experimentation with installation and time based media. Through these mediums the key notion of a bodily experience in space is explored from a phenomenological framework. Recent projects have been focused on embodied listening; listening and recording as a sensorial experience.\n10am – 12.30pm – Soundwalk\n12.30 – 1.30pm – Lunch Break. BYO\n1.30pm – 5pm – Binaural Recording\nWhat to bring:\nComfortable clothes and shoes for walking (slow paced)\nMosquito repellant for general outside use\nSunscreen/Hat\nHeadphones or earbuds\nIf you own a sound recorder\, binaural microphones – bring along.\nIf you have questions about the workshop please contact connect@northsite.org.au \n  \nJoin the workshop \n

SUMMARY:Art Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join arts writer Tess Maunder as she guides you through an introduction to arts writing structures\, focusing on artist bios and reviews. \n“Writing about visual art and wider culture is essential to thinking critically\, communicating with the public and integral to understanding\, evaluating and visually analyzing artworks. \nIt’s a great skill to develop and continue to hone throughout your practice. \nWriting doesn’t have to be complicated\, and actually writing without too much inflated language makes the most accessible text for readers.” \nJoin Tess Maunder as she discusses a range of different writing structures that you\, as an artist or a person interested in or currently working in the arts\, may need to know. \nThese include:\n1. Develop an exhibition review\n2. Develop an artist statement and/or professional bio \nThe workshop will be structured in three sessions. The first session will be largely listening to an overview of each type of text\, and best-practice surrounding text with a Q&A session. In the second session\, we will break into groups with a focus on either of the above choices and will together develop some writing. In the third session\, we will present our findings and something we learnt from the day. \nWorkshop timeline:\n9:45 AM — Arrive at NorthSite at Bulmba-ja\, 96 Abbott Street\, Cairns City 4870\n10:00 AM — First and second session\n12:30 PM — Light food\, tea and coffee provided\n1:00 PM — Third session\n2:00 PM — Concludes workshop \nThis workshop is usually valued at $160 per person but we are able to offer a discounted price of $45 per person. For NorthSite Members\, this workshop is free of charge. NorthSite Members can phone the gallery on 0740509494 to book their tickets. SUMMARY:Photographic Books: an Intro to DIY Bookmaking
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to book design using a series of photographs to make a finished photo book. \nIn this workshop you will be guided to use the online publication design program Blurb to create a photo book – design\, publish\, print and distribute.\nAishah Kenton and Sean Davey from the Pacific Centre for Photographic Arts will share some of their favourite tangible objects – photographic artist books and work with you to use accessible tools to combine your images and design a book from your images that you can produce as a one-off item or re-print to share with family\, friends and fans.\nLearn formatting\, technical and production considerations and start your own digital photo book in the workshop. This is a great skill for artists and creatives to learn as it can be used as a creative and artistic tool but also as a professional folio to communicate your practice. \n“The great thing about these online photographic book-publishing programs is that they allow you to more easily create your own book. The fact that as an artist\, you can now publish your own book with low costs\, anytime after you’ve created a body of work\, is incredible. In doing this\, it helps you visualise your work in a final product. The guidelines in online book publishing programs make it a lot easier to format and provide a huge introduction to book design principles.” Aishah Kenton \nItems supplied:\nExisting photo books for inspiration and demonstration\, wifi\,5 hrs tuition\, tea\, coffee and lunch\nWhat to bring:\nLaptop with Blurb software downloaded\nAccess to all the digital images you wish to work with \nDate: Tuesday 22 February\, 10am – 4pm.\nWhere: Studio C\, NorthSite at Bulmba-ja. This activity demonstrates the power of storytelling through incidental photography of everyday life and shows that each of us has a unique position\, aesthetic\, and perspective to share. \n“This program gives people an awareness that each of us is likely to have a body of photographic work in our phones or in an old photo album on the shelf\, incidental work\, work that explores where they are\, their life. SUMMARY:Postponed | APT10 Kids On Tour comes to NorthSite
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED\nDue to the current impact of coronavirus cases within our region\, we have postponed the APT10 Kids On Tour workshops. We endeavour to bring these workshops to the gallery in April 2022.\n\nAPT10 Kids on Tour includes activities developed in collaboration with artists Shannon Novak (Aotearoa New Zealand)\, Phuong Ngo (Australia)\, Syagini Ratna Wulan (Indonesia)\, Jamilah Haji (Thailand)\, Gidree Bawlee Foundation of Arts (Bangladesh) and Vipoo Srivilasa (Thailand / Australia). \nPhuong Ngo’s collage activity Pattern Exchange 2021 is informed by the artist’s interest in the colonial history of cement tiles in Vietnam and invites children to create their own geometric tile design using patterned coloured paper\, scissors and glue\, while Shannon Novak’s Make Visible: Celebrate You 2021 is a digital interactive that asks kids to design a flag to represent their identity and what makes them happy. \nSyagini Ratna Wulan’s activity Atom 2021 invites children to add colour and pattern to a variety of mandala forms often used in spiritual and religious practices\, and Vipoo Srivilasa’s Garden of Love 2021 encourages participants to draw a portrait or write a message to the person they miss the most and is accompanied by Dok Rak\, the animated APT10 Kids ‘flower bear’ mascot\, and friends. \nDeveloped in collaboration with the Gidree Bawlee Foundation of Arts in Bangladesh\, Where Stortles Roam 2021 invites children to use paper templates to make a puppet of an imaginary animal inspired by the Bengali poet Sukumar Roy’s ‘Khichuri (Stew Much)’. In Jamilah Haji’s drawing activity Happiness and Desire 2021\, children of all abilities can think about what makes them happy and what they wish for. \n  \nAPT10 Kids on Tour is free QAGOMA Touring program available to regional Queensland communities\, with thanks to generous support from The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.\n \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nImage credit: Phuong Ngo / Australia b.1983 / Pattern Exchange 2021 / Commissioned for APT10 Kids with support from the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation / © The artist / Photograph: Chloë Callistemon\, QAGOMA
