SUMMARY:Creative Convergence // Season 6 Artist Talks\, Opening Event & Special Screening
DESCRIPTION:NorthSite Contemporary Arts invites you to Creative Convergence — an evening that brings together artists\, filmmakers\, musicians\, and our wider community for one vibrant end-of-year celebration.   \nThis special event showcases new exhibitions by Hannah Murray\, and by the collaborative duo Tetsuya Tabata & Mariana Verdaasdonk\, offering an opportunity to hear directly from the artists as they speak about their practices\, ideas\, and work on display.   \nWith doors and bar open from 3:00pm\, guests are encouraged to arrive early\, settle in\, and enjoy the first moments of connection and impressive new exhibitions.  \n3:30PM: Artists Talk | Tetsuya Tabata & Mariana Verdaasdonk\n3:45PM: Artist Talk | Hannah Murray\n4PM: Official Opening and formal welcome with Karen Le Roy\, Acting Executive Manager Creative Life | Cairns Regional Council \nFollowing the artist talks and a formal welcome in the NorthSite foyer\, the event moves from the galleries and transitions into Bulmba-ja Theatre for a unique cinematic experience. NorthSite is proud to present two short films from Indonesia’s PSBK as part of the Dialog Lensa project: SERAKAH and BERSIAR SINAR. One screening will feature live musical accompaniment by Yogyakarta-based composer and musician Jenar Kidjing. Come along to experience the power of photography translated to the stage\, as we prepare to bring Australian artists into the cross-cultural collaboration in 2026. Through a Q&A with collaborators\, audiences will gain an insight into the process and understanding of the project’s purpose and its ongoing creative relationship with NorthSite.  \n5-6:30PM: Screenings and Performance // Bulmba-Ja Theatre \nThe evening concludes back in the gallery spaces\, where guests can mingle\, revisit the exhibitions\, and continue conversations sparked throughout the program. Creative Convergence is designed as a generous\, connective\, and celebratory event — a chance to witness new work\, encounter fresh perspectives\, and engage with both local and international creative communities. We encourage you to RSVP\, join us\, and be part of this rich\, multidimensional end of year gathering at NorthSite Contemporary Arts.  \nTickets free for NorthSite members\, friends\, and community.  \nPlease RSVP below – we look forward to seeing you! \n \nMore about our exhibitions and special screening\nJakuzuré 蛇崩 | Tetsuya Tabata & Mariana Verdaasdonk \nJakuzuré 蛇崩 (meaning “splitting snakes”) is an immersive installation inspired by an Edo-period tale and the artists’ reflections on how rupture can create new pathways and possibilities. Through projections\, sculptures\, paintings\, and paper cuttings\, it invites visitors into an environment shaped by the landscapes of Tokyo and Cairns\, where transformation and renewal are constantly in motion. Artists Tetsuya Tabata and Mariana Verdaasdonk merge their complementary practices to create a contemplative space that celebrates cycles of change\, growth\, and rebirth.  \nSunshine Noir | Hannah Murray \nSunshine Noir explores the dynamic tension and interdependence between light and shadow\, reflecting the paradoxes of tropical life where beauty and darkness coexist. Influenced by Dutch still life\, Ukiyo traditions\, and Surrealism\, the works blur reality and imagination through layered\, unexpected still-life compositions drawn from Far North Queensland. Using vessels\, glassware\, and tropical flora and fauna as metaphors\, the series reflects on ephemeral beauty and the impermanence of life and the natural world.  \nDialog Lensa 1&2: ‘SERAKAH’ & ‘BERSIAR SINAR’ Special Screening and Performance\nNorthSite Contemporary Arts and PSBK present a special screening of SERAKAH and BERSIAR SINAR\, highlighting an ongoing cross-cultural exchange between Far North Queensland and Yogyakarta. This event celebrates a growing partnership supported through Artslink’s Regional // Regional initiative and shares early works from the Dialog Lensa platform. It also offers audiences a glimpse into the development of Dialog Lensa #6\, which will continue to evolve through this multi-year creative connection. Together\, these screenings invite Cairns audiences to experience powerful performative works that merge photography\, performance\, sound\, and moving image while contributing to a rich and expanding artistic dialogue between the two regions. \n  \n  \n

Transmission. Protection. This special afternoon will feature artist talks\, a live performance\, and the chance to connect with like-minded art lovers while discovering the powerful ideas and practices shaping contemporary art in our region. \nCultural Knowledge is Currency: Generation. Transmission. Protection. is a new exhibition led by Yidinji Traditional Owner and cultural leader Carl Fourmile\, in collaboration with Minjil. SUMMARY:Season 2 // Artist Talks & Opening Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating our second opening series of the season\, with exhibitions by four incredible female artists; Matilda Nona\, Sue Healy\, Hannah Parker and Melody Woodnutt. \n10am – Doors Open \n11:30am – Artist  Talk | Hannah Parker Abstract Landscapes \n12pm – Artist Talk | Melody Woodnutt The Apparition \n12:30pm– Artist Talk | Sue Healey ON VIEW: ICONS \n1pm – Official Opening and Acknowledgements \n\nAshleigh Campbell\, CEO NorthSite Contemporary Arts\nHenrietta Marrie\, AM\, CIAF Co-Patron\nGuest Speaker – Cathy Hunt\, Executive Director\, WOW Australia \n\n2pm – Artist Talk | Matilda Nona Bupungu \n2:30pm – Free Performance | Melody Woodnutt \nRSVP for this event here. \n  \nPerformance details: Untitled (Opening Act)\nDuration 23 mins \nA short performative evocation to illuminate the exhibited death shroud. The shroud is intended to be an apparition emergent from a long buried boat ruin. The sound\, lighting and 16mm film work together to expand this apparition and create a portal into a speculative other world — one which is conjured for an unfinished boat ruin that never saw the sea. \nIn its heart\, the artwork acts to offer a radical optimism that objects of persistence (material\, societal\, political) can undergo change through the constructive efforts of transfiguration. \nThis transfiguration allows a familial boat ruin to reach a poetic\, new material form after the original boatbuilder’s death. \nPerformance Credits: Concept and Sound: Melody Woodnutt | Lighting Design: Lara Gabor | Violin: Adam Cadell | Percussion: Melody Woodnutt and Zela Papageorgiou | Additional Music track “Faster Than Cold” by Lawrence English and Philip Samartzis. Original Boat fragment by Frank Woodnutt.\n\nThis exhibition and opening performance is supported by the University of Melbourne Faculty of Fine Arts and Music and the VCA Foundation.

SUMMARY:NorthSite - Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NorthSite Contemporary Arts for the exhibition opening of The Ascended by Chantal Fraser. \nChantal Fraser\, a Sāmoan artist from Aotearoa/New Zealand\, explores themes of capitalism and state authority through photography\, performance\, and sculpture\, often incorporating ornamentation and personal adornment. Her work has been exhibited at renowned galleries in Australia\, Canada\, and France. The Ascended is a Griffith University Art Museum touring exhibition\, curated by Naomi Evans. \nThis opening event will be enhanced by Welcome to Country by Minjil and a live performance from the Pasifika Collective Group\, with the rhythmic and cultural expressions of traditional Samoan dance. Catering by Freshies Island Food\, a family-owned business\, carrying the culinary food influences of Polynesian ancestors with a modern twist.  \nJoin us for a unique event where we celebrate Chantal’s work while savouring live performances and Oceanic cuisine together. \n \nRSVP \n\nThe Ascended by Chantal Fraser\nThe Ascended exhibition crystallises Fraser’s exploration of power and class through her anti-colonial and anti-capitalist strategies\, developing a theory that links ornamentation\, personal protective devices and protest aesthetics as means to subvert and liberate identities. Fraser’s multimedia practice has garnered significant acclaim within Australian contemporary art and reflects the complexity of lived experiences for diasporic Sāmoan and Pasifika communities. \n\n\nChantal Fraser: The Ascended is a Griffith University Art Museum touring exhibition\, curated by Naomi Evans.\nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council\, its arts funding and advisory body. SUMMARY:NorthSite - Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Start your weekend with art and celebrate these exhibition openings at NorthSite; MANdala by Geoffrey Schmidt\, scattered massive by John Pagnozzi and Waanji Away by Jack Wilkie-Jans. \nJoin us on Friday\, 12th May 2023 \n\n5.30PM Event Opens\, Bar Open\n6:00PM Opening speeches\n7:30PM Event close\n\nBOOK TODAY \nWe charge a ticket fee to ensure attendance. If the ticket price is a financial barrier to attending\, please email : connect@northsite.org.au \n\nMore Information\nGeoffrey Schmidt\, MANdala – Gallery 2\nMANdala is an establishment of a sacred space\, a focusing of attention\, a symbol of the universe and a meditative representation of higher thought. This work is an embracing and balancing of the male body with the acceptance of self and identity. The blending of the body\, mind\, environment and established systems. The Mandala works as an equalizing and quieting tool to establish a resting point. The images are a centered and symmetrical balancing of the human condition\, personalized psychology and systems of existence. \nJohn Pagnozzi\, scattered massive – Long Wall\nscattered massive presents a collection of work that is about the practice of drawing. Grounded in everyday or found material\, crayon\, house paint\, spray paint\, sand\, textile; the work approaches drawing as a process of spontaneous object making. It is influenced by ambiguity\, mood and poetry. \nJack Wilkie-Jans\, Waanji Away – Foyer Wall\nGrowing up in Weipa\, on the Western Cape of Cape York Peninsula\, remain some of the most wonderful years of my life—close to family and growing up with my siblings\, cousins and friends with so much freedom. I consider myself enriched by this time and by the fact these years\, those places and [most of] those people are still very much part of my life today. But\, there were times when the freedoms I enjoyed\, were not afforded to my Old People. \nImages courtesy of the artists’. Left to right: Geoffrey Schmidt\, John Pagnozzi\, Jack Wilkie-Jans.

SUMMARY:NorthSite Open - Sandra Selig - Exploring Giant Molecules
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NorthSite for the opening event of Exploring Giant Molecules and a special performance by the artist Sandra Selig. \nExploring Giant Molecules is the largest solo exhibition of Queensland artist Sandra Selig\, bringing together key examples of her interdisciplinary projects from the past two decades. \nSelig works at the intersection of visual art and experimental music\, using humble materials such as thread\, paper\, light and sound to articulate intangible notions of form\, space and time. \nThe exhibition presents seven projects that address the dominant concerns\, materials and forms of Selig’s ongoing bodies of work\, including the artist’s pendulum salt drawings that transform throughout the exhibition. Also included is a new thread installation that responds to the gallery’s architecture and spider webs captured on paper—projects that have evolved organically over time and in response to the spaces Selig works and exhibits in. \n  \nJoin us on Friday\, 28th April 2023 \n5.30PM Event Opens\, Bar Open \n6:00PM Welcome to Country \n6:30PM—7:15PM Performance \n7:30PM Event close \n  \n\n \nBOOK HERE \n  \nWe charge a ticket fee to ensure attendance.
