SUMMARY:Your Story: Sequencing and narrative with personal photography
DESCRIPTION:Participants will work with a selection of 50+ existing personal images\, arranging their photographs in a folio of fresh image sequences. \n  \nWho\, What\, Why: \nPhotographers Sean Davey and Aishah Kenton of the Pacific Centre for Photographic Arts will guide you through a range of considerations and approaches to arrive at an intimate folio of personal photographs. \nEach participant will create a new series of photographs presented in a cohesive folio\, that communicates narrative and feeling solely through image. This activity demonstrates the power of storytelling through incidental photography of everyday life and shows that each of us has a unique position\, aesthetic\, and perspective to share. \n“This program gives people an awareness that each of us is likely to have a body of photographic work in our phones or in an old photo album on the shelf\, incidental work\, work that explores where they are\, their life. Through considered selection\, aesthetic and subjective considerations\, inclusion and reduction\, everyday photographs can be combined and bought into a new realm of communication.” Sean Davey \n  \nItems supplied: \nFolios\, paper\, pencils\, 5 hrs tuition\, tea\, coffee and lunch. \n  \nWhat to bring: \nPhysical photos – participants are required to bring 50 – 100 diverse photographs. \nSuggested content: old family photo albums\, film packets of travel shots\, found photo collections or digital images from your phone camera roll to be pre-printed as 6 x 4 images. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Kate Robertson and special Guest Chief Alex Dawia
DESCRIPTION:Join Artist Kate Robertson and Chief Alex Dawia to discuss her exhibition Kuna Siuwai Pokong – Medicinal plants from Siwai\nAbout this event \nNorthSite Contemporary Arts Invites you to walk through Kate Robertson’s exhibition\, Kuna Siuwai Pokong – Medicinal plants from Siwai with the artist\, discuss her artworks in discuss her artworks in concept and presentation. \nThis exhibition chronicles plants and their medicinal properties from the Siwai region of Bougainville Island\, an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea\, through photographic light recordings. Concerned with the erosion of tacit traditional medicinal knowledge\, Chief Alex Dawia of the Taa Lupumoiku Clan approached and invited Australian artist Kate Robertson to chronicle Siwai plant knowledge for preservation. Chief Jeffrey Noro of the Rura Clan\, also from Siwai\, joined their efforts\, motivated by similar concerns to preserve tacit knowledge systems and provide positive recognition of their region. \nOver five years\, the project has evolved to include photographic prints\, an embroidered fabric panel and a published book to explore how cross-cultural projects can provide mutual benefits through repatriation and transparency. Ultimately\, it is a holistic inquiry into how we might work together across territorial borders\, cultures and skillsets to achieve a shared future. \nHo mi ho kui ngung pekong tokunoi riku\, hoko kukarei ho kui pokong tokunoi rihetong. Uwa ko\, hoi nekong hongowa’a nahamong\, ho kui pokong mi\, ho pokong itikai yi haha’a roro ngo tawah. Ho korokoro rori hungyo\, hoko musimang nekong toku topo inakarei.\n(When you lose the traditional name\, you lose the knowledge of the plant because the traditional name describes the functionality of the plant. Therefore\, when we lose our language\, we are bound to lose our biodiversity because we can no longer find the value in each plant). ”\n– Dr Jeffrey Noro \nArrive at NorthSite\, Bulmba-ja 96 Abbott St\, Cairns City at 11.45am for 12pm talk in gallery 2.\nPlease sanitise and register your details at the entrance for COVID Contact Tracing via paper slip or QR code.\nRSVP via Eventbrite is necessary for all attendees. \nWe look forward to seeing you here!\nNorthSite Team
